In the opening chapters, Tree-Ear is an ambitious, young man with dreams. After getting a job with Min as an apprentice, Tree-Ear is discouraged by the tasks he is actually given. His dream is to become a potter, but rather than receiving instruction, he is relegated to the tasks of preparing clay and cutting wood for the kiln.
