Why does Leper choose Gene to talk to in this time of difficulty?

It seems that initially Leper seeks Gene out because of their friendship. None-the-less, before Gene leaves Leper accuses him of hurting Finny and completely falls apart. It's almost as if Gene is taking the blame for what happened to Leper too.
