Did Gene join the army?

In the book it states that Gene told Brinker's dad that he was joining the Navy, but thrughout the whole book, it hints about the army. Did he join the Navy, Army, or none?

Gene explains that he is planning to join the Navy but the war ends and I don't think Gene joined any branch of the army.
