Although not seen in all of the characters, we certainly see Walter as one who wants to be the "man" of the family, although he has many vices that cause him to ruin the life of his family.  We see the mother character as one who wants what is best for her family, and so she gives part of her money to finance her daughter's education which will then lead to a better life for all.  We see a striving to create a better life when the family moves into a new house in a better neighborhood and we see a willingness of fight for what is "right" when they choose not to leave the neighborhood.
