Why does Ishmael and the other boys at the Benin Home hate it when the staff members and other people kept saying "It's not your fault'?

The staff member continually remind the boys that it isn't their fault in or to help them come to terms with the guilt that accompanies their previous actions. Addicted to and under the influence of drugs, the boys were like robits carrying out orders. As the boys lived with their memires and nightmares, they cane to hate hearing this pharase, but in the end, Ishmael comes to understand that the people at the Benin home are not being judgmental, they are evoking a sense of trust.... a trust that in the end, and in most circumstances, they receive.
