how do the association we make with the word plague affect our understanding of what the refugees have been through
I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to associate here. I will assume this has been a part of a classroom discussion. Most people relate the plague in terms a disease that exterminated a huge portion of the population in the 1300s.... also know as the Black Death. We can infer, that for the refugees, the senseless slaughter of their families and neighbors was very much like the dreaded and uncontrollable disease.
