Why does the story begin by emphasizing the fact that Marley was dead? What else do you learn about Marley in the opening paragraphs?

The character of Marley serves as a warning. We learn that he lived life in much the same way Scrooge was living his own. Marley areves as Scrooge's fist warning to change his ways..... he shows him what things will be like if he doesn't.
