Winston Smith is still an intellectual. He still searches for meaning behind the misery of the totalitarian party. We never find out if there are others like Winston. It is likely that if there are others who think like Winston, they are too terrified even their their facial expession would tip off the thought police. Although Julia liked to rebel, she did not posess the inellect and introspection of Winston. Winston spends the first part of the novel pondering why the party acts the way it does. He fantasizes that O'Brien shares his own intellectual rebellion and he longs for a Prole rebellion that will never happen.
