In my opinion, Miss Emily provokes feelings of pity. She was over-protected by her father, her young life was devoted to his care, and her father made sure that she'd have no other options. By the time her father died, Miss Emily was desperate and served as the perfect prey for men who wanted to use her. She had no friends, was a source of gossip, and had no one to depend on. She'd never been taught how to take care of business but had been taught how to use the family name.
