Zahrah the Windseeker is a fantasy novel by Nigerian writer Nnedi Okorafor published in 2005 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Set on a fictional planet, Zahrah is a young girl born with forbidden vine dreadlocks (Dada), said to possess magical abilities. The people of the Ooni Kingdom discriminate against those born with such hair.
Dari is Zahrah's best friend who is always by her side. Together, they venture into the jungle, where Dari is bitten by a poisonous snake. Fearing she might die, Zahrah sets out to find a rare egg that can cure Dari. In this coming-of-age story, she will hone her flying abilities and discover a whole new world in the green jungles of Ginen.
Zahrah the Windseeker won the 2008 Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa. It was shortlisted for the 2006 Carl Brandon Parallax Award and Kindred Award. The novel was also nominated for the 2006 Locus Award Nominee for Best First Novel.
