Woodcuts of Women: Stories Background

Woodcuts of Women: Stories is a collection of ten short stories written by the American writer Dagoberto Gilb and published in the year 2003. The short stories present ten stories and have as its main subject the interaction between men and women.

The protagonists of the stories are all Mexican-American men in search of love but unwilling to settle down. They are in a constant pursuit of something better and the stories capture the sentiment of yearning. The stories are different in the sense that they present different typologies of men and do not stop at presenting only one type of person. The conflicts usually remain unsolved and when they are solved the impression left is that the characters are still dissatisfied.

The title of the collection is also suggestive as it suggests that more than often, men are able to see only the outline of a woman’s personality and they don’t really get to know her and to know who she really is.
