Day 6

Walden Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Describe the style of Walden. How does the writer construct his famous work?

While it may be tempting to label Thoreau's writing as wordy and dull, his narrative prose reveals his abilities as a careful observer. His concise and contemplative writing results in memorable maxims. Thoreau uses concrete examples and elegant vocabulary stylistically. His enthusiastic, energetic language also results in humorous remarks and puns. He uses the seasons as a structure for his narrative, which accounts his purpose and means while living at Walden Pond in 1845-47.

  2. 2

What is spring like at Walden Pond? What does it mean for spring to come in the context of the narrative?
