Today I Am Carey Metaphors and Similes

Grief simile

After Mildred passes away, Carey begins to feel something strange: "But then I notice, like a hole in my emulation profiles: Mildred's profile still echoes there." Here, Carey uses a simile to describe something unfamiliar, using familiar experiences. Shoemaker's use of the word "hole", suggests that Carey feels a sense of loss.

Sock monkey simile

When describing the sock monkeys to Carey, Millie says that "their socks are like your skin." Here, she uses a simile to try and help Carey understand what she means, as Carey struggles to understand what a sock monkey is.

Memory simile

Carey reviews memories of Millie: "everything I know of Millie, every memory I have of her, everything that she is to me is present in my emulation net." Carey describes the memories as being "like a little spark," using a simile to help us understand what it is like to be an android.
