Written by author Martin L. Shoemaker, Today I Am Carey (published in 2009) tells the story of a person who is loses her memory and needs an android named Carey to help her have a normal life - and fill in all of the things that she can no longer remember. Mildred wants to get replicated so her life can go back to normal. but it is too late and she dies. So Carey must find a purpose for her life, something she struggles with immensely. When she decides to help Mildred's heartbroken family to keep them out of harm and to take care of the family's house, she partially finds purpose, but Carey has to adapt to life challenges and survive a complex and oftentimes, difficult and challenging life.
When Today I am Carey was released, it got amazing reviews with one person saying it is "Excellent, thought-provoking story from an author who is hitting on all cylinders. Read it; you won't regret it. Publisher's Weekly also like the book a lot, calling it a "meditative debut" and saying that "Kindness, love, and compassion make Carey an empathetic character through which to view Shoemaker’s complex, beautiful world."
