The Virgin Suicides Imagery

Mrs. Lisbon

The boys who narrate this novel have no special liking for Mrs. Lisbon. They always try to find some signs of her beauty, but “the plump arms, the brutally cut steel-wool hair, and the librarian's glasses” spoil her look. Mrs. Lisbon assumes “a queenly iciness”. She is very severe and never allows her daughters to do what they want. She reminds the image of an evil stepmother.

Cecilia’s voice

Before committing suicide, Cecilia looks very upset. Her party is just beginning to get fun, but she worries and thinks about something unpleasant. It is the last time her friends see and hear her. “The maturity of her voice surprises everybody. More than anything, she sounds old and tired.” Her troubles and disquiet sound in her voice, but nobody resolves to help her.

Memory about the beautiful

Memories of the Lisbon girls always give pleasant emotions to the neighborhood boys. They remember “the colors of their eyes, the location of moles, dimples, centipede scars”. It has been so long since the Lisbon girls smiled, but boys still remember “short picture of their smiles with crowded teeth”. The Lisbon girls were the most beautiful creatures and only reflected kindness and virginity.
