    What does Marlowe think about the life of a private eye? Why does he stay in this business?

    Begin this discussion by asking students how great the life of a private detective seems to be. Consider what Marlowe's life looks like: he drinks excessively, is forced to deal with frustrating and dishonest people, and everyone seems to be against him. Look at chapter 21 to see how unglamorous the life of a detective can really be. Ask students what Marlowe says that explains his motivation for staying in business, namely that he enjoys hearing other people's stories.
