    What is the difference between West Egg and East Egg?

    It is important that students understand that both of these areas are wealthy and fashionable - however, they cater to different kinds of wealth and fashion. East Egg is old money. Its residents are rich without ostentation, secure in their social standing. They look down on West Egg, which is home to new money. These people are also extremely wealthy, and sometimes even more wealthy than the families on East Egg, but they earned their money rather than inherited it, and therefore they are seen as crass and striving. Their social status is not secure.
