Tom is a philandering brute. He doesn't treat Daisy well but affords her a rich lifestyle that comes from old money (money inherited through generations). Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy. He puts Daisy on a pedestal and sees her as a goddess. His money is "new money" obtained through the bootlegging business. Daisy likes the attention Gatsby gives her but does not feel worthy of his adulation. She has gotten used to Tom's abuse. She is also weary that Gatsby might one day lose his fortune.
