The indisposed boy is the protagonist. His parents take him to a doctor who diagnoses that the boy’s testicle is the cause of his sickliness.

The parents adore their son even though he is incapacitated. Seemingly, the doctor in “Witness” is not the first one to attend the boy as he has been taken to a pediatrician before. The parents do not lose hope of finding a cure for their son and are overprotective of the boy, as evidenced in how they interact with the doctor.
Hannah Owen (“Whither Thou Goest”)
Hannah is a thirty-three year old widow who outlives Sam. Hannah is of the opinion that it is improper for Sam to exist in other people’s lives, but not hers. She undertakes the endeavor of locating the recipient of Sam’s heart.
Sam (“Whither Thou Goest”)
Sam dies during a robbery, after which his prime organs are bequeathed to various beneficiaries. The bestowment of his organs distresses Hannah and brings life to standstill. Even though he is deceased, Sam lives in Hannah’s memory.
Ivy Lou (“Whither Thou Goest”)
Ivy Lou is Hannah’s cousin who reassures her after husband’s demise. Ivy Lou acknowledges the Biblical teachings about resurrection and reluctantly supports Hannah in her undertaking to trace Pope Henry (the man that was allotted her husband’s heart).
