Sony Pictures bought the film rights for the trilogy, in a "significant six-figure deal" to launch the series with Graham King and Tobey Maguire attached as producers. On April 15, 2014, it was officially announced that Chloë Grace Moretz would star as Cassie Sullivan, and J Blakeson would direct from a script by Susannah Grant. Nick Robinson and Alex Roe were cast as Ben Parish and Evan Walker, respectively, Maika Monroe was cast as Ringer, and Liev Schreiber was cast as the villain.
The first trailer was released online on September 1, 2015. The film was released on January 22, 2016, to generally unfavourable reviews, making sequels unlikely.
