Chapter 7 - Section 7.3 - Bone Development - Before You Go On - Page 215: 13

Answer

A child’s bones are smooth because they are not used as often as those of an adult. The osteoclasts removematrix and get rid of unnecessary mass. If a bone is heavily used, or a stress is consistently applied to a particular region of a bone, osteoblasts deposit new osseous tissue and thicken the bone. People who perform heavy manual labor have bones with greater density and mass than people who are not as active or have a sedentary life.
