Zone of Hypertrophy: chondrocytes enlarge and begin to secrete alkaline phosphatase (calcification of matrix) 4. Zone of Calcification: chondrocytes are walled off in a calcified matrix, chondrocytes under apoptosis which means death 5. Zone of Ossification: osteoclasts (chondroclasts) break down the calcified matrix, osteoblasts begin forming the spongy bone
