Answer
The two kinds of electron microscopes are the transmission electron microscope and the scanning electron microscope.
They have enhanced modern understanding of cells by allowing scientists to see details at the molecular level. Electron microscopes have greatly improved resolution over light microscopes.
Magnification is just enlarged and zoomed in. Resolution is the ability to see detail. A picture of a cell that is magnified (zoomed in) is worthless unless the resolution is good (we can see the details).
Work Step by Step
The transmission electron microscope uses a beam of elections to see a cell's ultrastructure. The scanning electron microcope produced 3D images at high magnification and resolution, but it can only view surface features.
Improved imaging allows us to see and understand more about cells. A light microscope might be able to magnify 400x, but that will not allow us to see super fine details. The electron microscopes not only allow us to view cells under magnification, but also provide us with outstanding resolution for us to clearly see fine details.
Magnification and resolution are important for any image. We always want good resolution. Magnification without resolution will result is a very blurry object.
