Chapter 18 - Section 18.5 - Figure 18.21 - Hemostasis - Page 698: 1

Answer

Fig. 18.21 A platelet plug is formed when when platelets adhere to exposed collagen fibers; this plug functions to seal off damaged blood vessels.

Work Step by Step

A clot develops when a fibrin network formed from fibrinogen enmeshes platelets. The seal formed by the fibrin clot lasts longer than a platelet plug. It not only halts the hemorrhage, but gives the blood vessel time to repair itself.
