Chapter 1, Equations and Graphs - Section 1.3 - Lines - 1.3 Exercises - Page 113: 73

Answer

The two lines are parallel.

Work Step by Step

RECALL: (1) Parallel lines have equal slopes. (2) Perpendicular lines have slopes whose product is $-1$. (3) The slope-intercept form of a line's equation is $y=mx+b$ where $m$ = slope. Write the second equation in slope-intercept form to obtain: $2y-4x-5=0 \\2y = 4x+5 \\\dfrac{2y}{y}=\dfrac{4x+5}{2} \\y=2x + 2.5$ Both lines have $m=2$ therefore they are parallel.
