Chapter 1 - Introduction - Questions - Page 18: 1.3

Answer

Answers will vary. Possible answers: glass windows, diamond, and cement

Work Step by Step

Ceramics tend to be oxides, nitrides, and carbides, meaning they contain oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon. Glass windows are made from silicon oxide, which is a ceramic. They are brittle (i.e. a glass window shatters rather than deforms when force is applied to it), which is characteristic of ceramic materials. Diamond consists solely of carbon atoms. Cement composition can vary, but it tends to consist of calcium and other oxides/hydroxides.
