Song ("On Her Loving Two Equally") Characters

Song ("On Her Loving Two Equally") Character List

Narrator

The narrator is a flirtatious young woman romantically involved with two men. The romance is clearly not one of deep and profound passion not just because she cannot decide between the two, but because when she is with one, she thinks only of the other. This figure is yet another bold and brazen portrayal by Behn of the aggressive sexuality of females which was scandalous and controversial to reveal in print at the time, especially by a woman poet.

Damon

One of the woman’s lovers and it is significant that the only thing the reader knows about him is his name. No physical description is given and, what’s more, nothing is indicated that distinguishes him from Alexis. In fact, the poem opens with the narrator admitting that Damon had never and could never succeed in capturing her heart without the existence of the other man in her life. Damon has a piece of her heart only in relation to the other man.

Alexis

One of the woman’s lovers and it is significant that the only thing the reader knows about him is his name. No physical description is given and, what’s more, nothing is indicated that distinguishes him from Damon. In fact, the poem opens with the narrator admitting that Alexis had never and could never succeed in capturing her heart without the existence of the other man in her life. Alexis has a piece of her heart only in relation to the other man.

Cupid

The narrator finally makes a desperate appeal to Cupid—the god who shoots arrows which cause people to fall in love—to withdraw one of those darts. Still, she can decide which of Cupid’s arrows he should remove: the one with Damon’s name on it or Alexis, further proof that this is not a grand and profound love, but merely a flirtatious infatuation with two men.
