Sister Outsider grapples with the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality, as well the major themes of sexism, homophobia and Black feminism. Given Lorde's appeal, Sister Outsider is a pioneering and canonical Black feminist text, and many authors have used various essays and speeches from the text to further theorize women of color feminisms, intersectionality, and queer of color critique. There are a number of both older and contemporary texts (books and essays) that would greatly complement this text, including other Audre Lorde works.
