Because Rodrigues's journey in Silence references and draws from aspects of the Passion of Christ, it may be useful for students to read passages from the New Testament. Aside from this, Silence has been adapted to film on three occasions, including recently by an American director, Martin Scorcese. Scorcese's 2016 film Silence garnered critical acclaim and is the most faithful of the different adaptations of the book (a fact that helped to earn it its R-rating).
