Jefferson Davis Bussey (Jeff)
Jefferson Davis Bussey (Jeff) is the protagonist of the story. At the age of 16 years, he joins the Union with the purpose to protect his state and family.
Emory Bussey
Emory Bussey is Jeff’s father. He took part in the Mexican-American war which made him a hero in the eyes of young Jeff.
Edith Bussey
Edith Bussey is Jeff’s mother. She is hard hit by Jeff’s decision to go to war, but she doesn’t try to prevent him from going.
Ring
Ring is Jeff’s first dog; Jeff was very attached to Ring.
Dixie
Dixie is a dog which Jeff had found on the battlefield. He takes Dixie with him, but later gives her to Lucy.
Lucy Washbourne
Lucy Washbourne is Jeff’s first love.
Lee Washbourne
Lee Washbourne is Lucy’s bother. He was the soldier of Confederate troops, and was killed during war actions.
Noah Babbit
Noah Babbit is Jeff’s friend. He fights on the side of the Union.
David and John
David Gardner and John Chadwick are Jeff’s hometown friends. They together went to join the army.
