In Chapter 12, we learned that the members of Jeff’s group were shocked and angry when they heard the Confederate propaganda describing them as “murderers, thieves, and robbers,” propaganda that went on to claim their goal was to destroy the South and enslave its people. Jeff and his cohorts viewed the propaganda as unfair and false. They believed that what they were doing was noble and just, as their goal was to both preserve the Union and end slavery. The propaganda also served to motivate the group to fight harder against their enemies.
