    Morito believes that he used to love Kesa before she married Wataru, yet questions whether perhaps he only desired her sexually. He also wonders this because his feelings for her waned after they consummated their relationship. Morito admits that in fact he hates and fears Kesa as well—hates her for her ugliness of body and mind, and fears her for her implicit threat to kill him if he does not kill Wataru.
