Moscow and its mightiness
The narrator refers to Moscow as a “mass of houses and churches that strikes the eye as a mighty amphitheater”. Especially beautiful it is when “lit by sun, when its evening rays ignite the innumerable gilded cupolas and the innumerable crosses rising up to the sky!” Under the “crosses rising” churches and monasteries are meant, which Moscow is rich in.
The start of a day
Erast had produced such an impression on Liza that she could not sleep all night long and went out to the river, there she met a new day, saw the sun rising. The image of it is beautifully depicted by the writer: “The rising luminary of the day awakened all creations: groves and hedges came to life, birds fluttered about and began to sing; and the flowers raised their heads to drink in the life-giving rays of light.”
On the wings of love
After the morning when Liza met Erast and they declared their love to each other the most lofty feelings occupied her mind and soul, she said to her mother: “What a beautiful morning! Everything is so gay in the field! The skylarks have never sung so well; the sun has never shone so brightly; and the flowers have never smelted so pleasant!” Such an image shows how happy Liza was that morning.
