Persepolis is a graphic novel/memoir covering themes of religion, family, and the rites of coming of age. In terms of general popularity and as a critically-acclaimed work, it shares a seat with Maus I and II (Art Spiegelman), another graphic novel which covers modern political historical events through the lens of a private individual. Palestine, by Joe Sacco, is also an example in which modern events (the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in this case) are covered by a graphic journalist.
