    Note the diction (“tortured,” “thrust,” and “dirty”) reflecting a rather unsavory character. He is “reposing at full length, smoking a long clay pipe,” which illustrates his appreciation of comforts in life, and his “ornamented” fingers show his aspirations of wealth.
