The Devil

The devil is a symbol of power and influence. The devil can make people rich if they sell their souls to him. When Mr. Faust wants to increase his wealth and influence, he exchanges his soul with the devil. Since Mr. Faust is not interested in spending time with his wife, he prefers doing anything possible to be richer every day.

Materialism

Mr. Faust symbolizes materialism. In his marriage, Mr. Faust is not interested in his wife because he only wants to increase his wealth. The reader also learns that Mr. Faust is materialistic when he goes to the devil to ask for anything he wants in this life.

Mrs. Faust

Mrs. Faust is a symbol of adventure and leisure. When Mrs. Faust realizes that she is in marriage for convenience, she becomes an adventurer who travels from one place to another to enjoy what life offers. The more Mr. Faust keeps from Mrs. Faust, the more she discovers new places for leisure, shopping, and having fun.
