Images of Lonliness
The images of loneliness are prevalent in the novel. All the characters suffer from loneliness and feel dejected. Jonathan remained in isolation because his parents abandoned him when he was a child. India felt alone because Sid left her, and Sid suffered through loneliness because of her identity. Sydney suffers the loss of Zain while Jonathan loses both his parents and lives his life in isolation.
Images of Motherhood
Sid leaves her child to make her life as a man. She transforms her identity and lives the life of a man but despite of abandoning her family, she misses them. When she reconciles with them as a man, she tries to explain her decisions to Jonathan and wants him to forgive her. She has an intimate and cordial relationship with her son despite of their differences.
Images of Crab
There are images of a crab having a paradoxical movement i.e. both forward and sideways. The image of the crab represents the complexity of life and the urge to move in any situation.
