Moving Forward Sideways Like a Crab Background

Published in 2014 by Shani Mootoo, Moving Forward Sideways Like A Crab is a fictional book with an interesting take on life. The main character of the novel is Jonathan Lewis-Adey, who has had a relatively hard childhood. When he was younger, his parents divorced, and it isn't until later in his life (the story that is told) that he finds his long-lost mother. Received well upon release, Moving Forward was nominated for Canada’s Scotiabank Giller Prize. The book has a 4.3 (of 5) star review on Amazon, and 3.4 (of 5) star review on Goodreads.

Shani Mootoo was born in 1957 in Ireland, but moved to Canada at a young age, where she has written most of her books. Her first publication was named Out on Main Street, which is a collection of short stories. Cereus Blooms At Night was her first novel, published in 1996. As a child, Mootoo experienced some of the same trauma's expressed in her books. To help cope with this pain, she also works as an artist, her works being displayed at several museums. Moving Forward is her most recent book.
