Notes to the Teacher

This lesson plan makes use of Elizabeth Sprigge's English translation of Miss Julie, as provided in the book Six Plays of Strindberg.

The teacher should also be aware that sensitive subjects are discussed in Miss Julie, including attempted murder and a possible suicide. The play also contains some abusive language, and the misogynistic comments in the "Author's Preface" of the text may also cause offense. The teacher ought to use their judgment of the particular classroom and the text to ensure that proper accommodations and warnings are made as necessary. Above all, ensure that the classroom remains a respectful place for productive and non-threatening conversations about the text.
