What kind of impact does the Count have in the play? Is this helped or hurt by his absence?
Arguably, the Count's absence is never really felt by the other characters of Miss Julie. The Count is a veritable symbol of the class system which Miss Julie and Jean try to rebel against, and like a mirror, the image they hold of him reveals their own inner contradictions. The Count's absence is therefore a kind of presence – albeit not an embodied one – and serves as a kind of device through which Strindberg further develops his characters.
