Why does Sam get upset with Hally’s harsh words about his father?
Although it may seem as if Hally hates his father, in reality his feelings towards his dad are more complicated. He may resent his father’s addiction and feel embarrassed by him, but deep down he also loves his father. Sam understands this better than Hally does, and knows that when Hally disrespects his father he is also hurting himself. That’s why when Hally makes a joke of his father’s disability and is flippant about cleaning up after his father, Sam is upset with him.
