Magisterium Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The Colloquium

The Colloquium is a symbol of displeasure. Throughout the novel, Jeff Hirsch mentions that no one wants to live in the Colloquium because it is not a good place. For instance, Glen’s mother mysteriously disappears from the Colloquium because she does not want anything to do with it. Despite knowing that she is responsible for caring for her daughter and husband, Glen's mother decides to abandon her family to seek a better life elsewhere. On the other hand, Glen is working so hard in her studies so that she can invent a new place where she will live. Consequently, characters in Magisterium want to move out of their place to search for a better planet to live on.

Metal bracelet

The metal bracelet symbolizes a strong bond between Glen and her father. Glen's mother disappeared when Glen was six years old. Since then, Glen and her father have developed a strong bond. The father gifts Glen a metal bracelet to show his love and affection. The father asks Glen to wear the metal bracelet when she crosses the border to search for her mother. The bracelet aims to protect Glen from harm when entering the new territory. In addition, the metal bracelet will help Glen to keep her memory intact.

The fence

The fence symbolizes obstacles that prevent Glen and her friend Kevin from actualizing their dreams. Kevin likens the fence to a monster or a witch that obscures them from learning the truth about the world. Consequently, Kevin vows to support Glen in her invention so they can one day cross the border and enter a new planet full of opportunities and good things that can make them happy.
