Late at night, Dr. Juvenal Urbino visits the apartment of a close friend of his, Jeremiah de Saint-Amour, who has just been found dead by suicide. Dr. Juvenal Urbino instructs the police officers to report it as an accident and he quickly makes funeral arrangements, as tomorrow will be Palm Sunday. He finds a letter from Saint-Amour and opens it and is shocked by what he finds.
He goes to the home of Saint-Amour's lover, who was revealed to Dr. Urbino for the first time in the letter. The home is in the old slave quarter of the city. Saint-Amour's lover is not surprised by the suicide, as she had been with Saint-Amour the night before, and...
