Welcome to the Monkey House contains all but one of the stories included in Vonnegut's previous collection, Canary in the Cathouse, released in 1961. Another collection of stories written in the same time period (1950-1968) were published in 1999 in a collection entitled Bagombo Snuff Box.

These stories, along with Vonnegut's other work, fall within the genres of satire, science fiction, and speculative fiction (it should be noted that some critics see "speculative fiction" as an umbrella term which includes science fiction amongst fantasy, magical realism, etc., but here we will distinguish them, as some of Vonnegut's stories are speculative, but not science fiction).
