Hood Feminism Summary

Hood Feminism Summary

Hood Feminism is a seminal work of feminist journalism that is based on the core belief that all genders are equal and that all communities of women, regardless of their race and color, have equal rights as human beings. The author, Mikki Kendall, argues that mainstream feminism in the United States has failed to include all women despite its claim that it represents over half of the world’s female population. In the book, Kendall takes a closer look at feminism in the world today and takes note of how true values of feminism have been forgotten. According to Kendall, feminism has been twisted to favor only a handful of individuals.

Kendall also dives deep into different issues which have been overlooked by most feminist; for instance, poverty, gun violence, hunger, education, reproductive justice and housing which should be at the core of issues affecting many women in the community. Kendall also dissolves myths and stereotypical beliefs that demean black women hence deny them the help they need, for instance, the beliefs that African American women have eating disorders and black communities hate education. The author strongly refutes these claims and gives a new perspective of looking at black women based on their strengths and achievements.

Kendall concludes her thesis that feminism should consider all women and the different challenges they face. Kendall also insists that women need to accept the hard truth that some women are oppressing others instead of uplifting them. The author also encourages feminist groups to consider that not all women face the same issue, a white woman’s struggles are different from that of a black woman. Kendall also cites the values that she believes should take center stage in feminism.
