Herzog continues themes that Bellow developed in previous books, especially the traditional bildungsroman The Adventures of Augie March and his immediate predecessor to Herzog, Henderson the Rain King. Bellow also returned to these themes later in life, particularly in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Humboldt’s Gift and his final novel Ravelstein. Other writers from this era who wrote the imagination of the American male include John Updike (Rabbit, Run), John Irving (The World According to Garp), and fellow Jewish writer Philip Roth (Portnoy’s Complaint).
