What kind of father is Herzog? Does he love his children? Is he a better dad to his kids than his father was to him?
While students will certainly be more sympathetic to Herzog than they will to Jonah, they will have likely built up some resentment about his selfishness thus far in the novel. Some will consider his attempts to be involved with Marco and June to be admirable, others will find it insufficient. However, he doesn’t seem to resent his children like Jonah did Herzog, especially late in life.
