How does the author build the theme of manipulation in the novel Empire World?

In the novel Empire of Wild, Dimaline explores how the rich people in society use their influence to exploit the poor. For example, Heiser is a wealthy man who has made his fortune through corruption. Heiser has connections to various government offices and uses this influence to steal from low-income people. The large tracks of land owned by Heiser are proceeds of corruption. One of the victims who lost her property to Heiser is Cecil. Heiser claims he is the legal owner of Cecil's land and uses fake documents to acquire the land. Consequently, Dimaline's novel is about the evils of corruption in society in which poor people become victims of corrupt and influential individuals.

Joan's family is an ironic character. Joan expects her family to stand by her side when her husband mysteriously goes missing. As a result, Joan discovers that she is alone and decides to undertake the mission on her own, hoping she will find Victor alive.

Why is the author considering the tent as one of the important symbols in the novel?

The tent is an important symbol in the novel because it represents Joan's hope. After searching for Victor for a year, Joan hears a voice similar to that of Victor from a tent nearby Walmart’s parking lot. When Joan enters the tent, she sees a preacher looking like Victor. Despite the preacher saying she does not recognize Joan, she is optimistic that she will find her husband soon. Whenever Joan remembers seeing the tent, she is energized to continue looking for her husband.
