Day 3

John Donne: Poems Lesson Plan

Reading Assignment, Questions, Vocabulary

Today's set of poems shows a deep religious devotional bent: this is not new for Donne, but it is new in its intensity. Have students consider Donne's depiction of God compared to others they may have encountered, including psalms and devotional texts. Also, have students revisit "Batter my heart" in light of these new poems.

-“Good Friday 1613, Riding Westward”

-“Hymn to God, My God, in my Sickness”

-“Spit in my face” (Holy Sonnet 11)

-“At the round earth’s imagined corners” (Holy Sonnet 7)
