    David goes to see Melanie’s play and, witnessing her on stage finds it possible that “in the months he’s been away, she has grown up, found herself.” He goes on to consider that “the trial was a trial for her too; perhaps she too has suffered, and come through.”

    Do you think David has evolved as a character since the beginning of the novel? What about this passage and other evidence from the text supports your position?
